Transport in holland - busses and TramsThe Strippenkaart
How to use the "strippenkaart" ?You can stamp the strippenkaart yourself using the stamping machines which can be found at (metro)stations, in trams, in some articulated buses and at some bus or tram stops. You count the number of strips (equals the number of zones you travel through), fold the strippenkaart and then stamp the next strip. This way you will stamp one more strip (the base strip) than the number of zones you travel through. The bus and tram drivers can also stamp your strippenkaart for you. All you need to do is inform them of the number of zones you intend to travel or mention your destination. In spite of the fact that they are usually aware of the number of zones connected to your trip, it would still be wise for you to be aware of it too. When you buy a 2, 3 or 8-strippenkaart from the driver, the first time it will always be stamped by the driver.
How many strips should be stampedFor travel by means of public transport The Netherlands has been divided into zones. The number of strips that should be stamped equals the number of zones in which you travel, plus one base strip. In case your means of transport takes you through the same zone several times you will obviously only count this zone once. At most stops and on the transport company''s schedule is indicated how many zones you travel through. The example below shows a trip from A to B through 7 zones. This trip requires you to stamp 8 strips: 7 zones plus one base strip.Traveling without a valid travel passWhen you travel without a valid travel pass, you could be fined upon inspection of your ticket. The official fine regulations are: When you pay the fine within 7 days, you will have to pay € 35,00. When you pay the fine after 7 days, the fine will be increased by € 10,00, administrative charges, and you will have to pay € 45,00. This amount should be paid within 3 weeks, counting from the date on which you have received the fine. In addition, the fine will be increased with the amount that was due for your trip.
