When the Chinese celebrate new years, China Town in the Zeedijk area in Amsterdam is the centre of all festivities. The Chinese New Year will be on January 29, 2006, which is the start of the year of the Dog. The New Year is traditionally celebrated with lots of noise, and the Chinese Liondance.
For the Chinese the New Years party is the
biggest event of the year. In Amsterdam, Chinatown is located around the Zeedijk (in between the Nieuwmarkt and the Red Light District) There will be
lots of fireworks all day, since the noise is said to chase away bad spirits. The area is known for Chinese and other international restaurants and shops. You can also find a
real Buddhist temple (the Fo Guang Shan He Hua Temple) on the Zeedijk!
