It's been 23 years since, in the Alhambra Theater on the Weteringschans, with the first Weekend of Terror, foundations were laid for the current Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival. Alhambra long ago made way for a luxury apartment complex, and an entire new generation of AFFF visitors had to be assimilated circa 1984. It's enough to make one feel like a dinosaur.

There's another reason to look back with a certain amount of nostalgia. With a couple of exceptions, most film journalists and cinefiles avoided the festival. 'As if there isn't enough pain in the world, now Stichting Film Events has come to Amsterdam', wrote the Utrechts Nieuwsblad in those days. The Weekend of Terror, organized by Film Events, was largely seen as a meeting ground for nerds with a taste for stomach-churning, violent horror.read more on www.afff.nl.
